Sivananda Yoga

Rishikesh

Probably the most common form of Hatha Yoga to enter western culture is the Rishikesh style. The name refers to the pilgrimage town at the foothills of the Himalayas beside mother Ganges - Rishikesh.

It is here, in one of its many ashrams (spiritual retreats) that Swami Sivananda taught the Rishikesh style to Swami Vishnudevananda, Van Lysbeth, Mircea Eliade and countless others who brought this style to the West.

Swami Sivananda

Swami Sivananda was the originator of this style which is also known as the Rishikesh style. Sivananda founded his Ashram in Rishikesh in 1936 and from there was born The Divine Life Society; in 1948 he created The Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy, to train students in spirituality, Yoga and Vedanta philosphy.

Swami Vishnu-devananda

S.Vishnuji

His disciple Swami Vishnu- devananda promulgated this Hatha Yoga style in America, Europe and South America from 1957 to 1993.
